So here it is over a year since my second hip replacement. It's is doing pretty well, it still gets a wee bit tired and sore on occasion, but I think it doing fine, and so do the docs.

However, I finally have an appointment next Monday for a catheter ablation to hopefully fix my chronic afib, YEA!

This will be the 3rd time for being scheduled, but I'm pretty sure that Monday morning, they'll be doing it for sure this time.

The doc gives it about a 60% chance of successfully ridding me of the afib. He says I'll be the patient with the longest history of afib affliction they've ever tried an ablation on, and he's pretty sure it will be the longest in the whole country.

I've had afib since way before 1997 when I had my first hip replaced. When I first started having it in the early 90s, there was no such procedure yet, any procedure they had required cracking the chest and it doing open heart. It was also considered experimental back then, and not coverable by insurance. For various reasons I have not been able to get it done all these years.

I've now had all the tests, and they think I may still be repairable. They were able to cardiovert me into normal sinus rhythm recently, but it only lasted for little over a day, as my condition is chronic.

We'll see how this goes. Keep a good thought and/or a prayer if you please. It would certainly be nice to take a walk without running out of breath again. I might even get inspired to ride again. Wink

Thanks,

Gene

good luck.....60%? That the one where they come up through the femoral artery and then break through the wall of the heart and burn around the pulmonary veins? Again, good luck and hopefully you can get off blood thinners so you can ride again..

I'm not sure of all the details. This is a newer development in procedure apparently. The doctors using the older ablative technique wouldn't do the procedure on someone that's had it as long as I have. Hell, I had to go through numerous different cardiologists just to get to an electrophysiologist in the first place, with the referral system and the insurance quagmire. Then I went through 2 of them, 3 if you count the one I consulted a few years ago.

Went through the same procedure 10yrs ago. Up the femoral artery and away they go.

You will be in our prayers.

All the best

All the best Gene. It's no fun when the mind says 'go ride', but the body says no ride.
Speedy recovery my friend.

No doubt being healthy is the ultimate goal but being able to ride again would be fantastic.
Positive thoughts sent your way, Gene.

Best wishes for 100% success and a speedy recovery Gene! What good is having a bike if the only pleasure you can get from it is looking at it. Sending positive thoughts your way.
Good Luck!

Best of luck Gene.

My father had this procedure (or a very similar version- snaked the femoral, blasted the rogue nerves/tissue) to cure chronic afib about ~5yrs ago. It was a long procedure, I think he went something like 10hrs on the table. Results: basically a success. He still has a few times a year that he goes into afib for short periods (a day or two). It seems to be triggered by stress/diet/drinking too much/health etc. Aside from that, he feels much better and I think at this point I am pretty sure he is off the rythmol, metoprolol, and coumidan, etc completely. He takes a baby aspirin in the morning, that's it.

If your experience is anything like his, you are going to come out of it with a lot more energy/pep/endurance etc. Very Happy

At first I thought Afib was a bench racers disease.

Just kidding. I know it's serious. My buddy Deco suffered Afib. he was my right hand man during HOG and event biz years. Apparently he did not suffer to the extent you do. He got by with them stopping his heart a couple of times.

For me..My deepest prayers are with you, we need you around for a while longer.

Gene,

Best of luck to you. My daughter had the same procedure and it was successful. I am hoping for the same result for you.

Thanks everyone.

I had sinus rhythm for a whole day and a half... Rolling Eyes

There were complications... my heart is abnormal, a genetic thing. Oh, and I flatlined for a little less than a minute.

But it's not over yet, I'll see the doc next week to find out more, and where we go from here.

Hhhmmm. Iwas hoping you would report green meadows, blue birds singing and fluffy white clouds in a blue sky.

Was the sinus rhythm there right out of the OR?

Follow you Doctors orders implicitly. Dr. M.'s orders "get well" m
