The first photo shows how the head gasket is not sitting central over the combustion chamber. You can see the gap at the top.
The next photo shows (sort of) how much of the head gasket is hanging over the combustion chamber. It hangs over more than the thickness of a paddle pop stick.
The other cylinders are not that bad.
It makes sense now that this is causing it because when we were turning the engine over on Friday night we thought we could hear a slight noise from that cylinder. Just like a little tick noise not a real solid metal hitting metal clunk. |

I haven't been able to find the old head gasket for comparison. I still had it last weekend but maybe it got tossed out.
Regardless I need to order new head gasket and maybe not from Cruising Image.
Who is a good supplier do you think? |

Yes the engine turns over fine without the head bolted on |

thats good to see - you were on the right track as you suspected this before you went looking - thats
reminds me of my cheapest engine rebuild, after a bit of spanner work and a coffee stop - went to start the bike - an allmighty bottom end rattle occured - big shit because i'd recently snapped a crank - fook it - tidy up and leave it for another day. Tidy up - why is there x 3 spanners missing ??? - -- now Lewis wasn't at the "talking age" but he was walking - hmmm - i'll just take a quick look - off with the rather open and upswept silencer can and link pipe - hayho my spanners - and no rattle |

Old thread, new head ache.
I can't get the exhuast cam gear up high enough to put the cam shaft in. It seems that the chain is too short. I'm sure it's the one that I had in the engine before (63 links)
I'll put a picture |

The engine turns over when I hold the chain up and let it roll over a hammer handle. This makes me think that the chain isn't bunched up under the crankshaft.
When I look with a torch down to the crankshaft the chain appears to be running smoothly and not buched up. Yet the chunt doesn't seem long enough.
What do you reckon?

Hang on. Does this mean that the chain must have some slack (a bit of a loop) under the crankshaft.
It's the only thing I can think of.
Now if this is the case is there anyway of sorting it out without taking off the head and getting the cam chain guide out of the way?
Thanks

The cam sprocket needs to be loose on the camshaft along with the cam chains as you install the EX cam into place, with everything on the cam in it's proper order, i.e. B chain, sprocket then A chain (R to L). Make sure the tensioner is locked completely open. Feed the cam through the chains and sprocket from left end of cam to center. Make sure everything is in the right position, like crank @ TDC (T1,4), and ex cam with #1 lobe pointing towards the intake cam. Next clamp down the cam holders to take up the valve springs, open the appropriate valves, and get the cam seated down into the bearings. Then put the sprocket up on the cam's flange with the A chain on it in the correct tooth/link position so the dots line up with the head's top plane, then tighten the cam sprocket. It may take a couple of attempts to get the timing right so the sprocket and chain are correct for the cam sprocket timing dots to line up. The valve springs may try to keep pushing the cam out of position. There is some spring tension that will be trying to move the cam out of the right position as you put it all together, makes it a fiddle. |

You have to roll a 750 chain into place, with the cam tightened down so no lobes are holding the cam up in any position. I believe it is in the 750 manual.

OK so I took the head off and got the slack out of the chain under the crankshaft.
Cleaned the head gasket and had fun doing it.
Put it back together and while I can get the cam gear "in place" now that the chain is longer. I can't get the cam shaft in. So I'm thinking......
1. I may have fuked it up again
2. How do you make sure that there is no slack in the chain around the crankshaft
3. When will the fun end
Thanks

I hook a wire like a coat hanger through the chain. Once the head is on I hook a weight on the wire, so the chain excess is hanging out of the top of the head with the weight keeping it there. |

I think I'll go back to that method once I get this thing sorted out. I let the chain fall down into the cam chain tunnel and fished it out with a magnet.
I've ordered a bore scope camera hoping I can find a way to look at the chain where it goes around the crank shaft |

Very similar to that, but perhaps with a 2m lead.
I just went down to the garage this morning and still can't get the cam shaft through the cam gear. It's been a while since I've put a cam shaft in or out but I think it wasn't too hard to do. |

It's been a few months since I pulled this new engine to fix my stuff up.
Now only a short time later it's about to go back in |
