1982 Honda CB750F - New Chassis

After many years of procrastinating, I have decided it’s about time to build a Honda CB750F. Back in the 80’s I once owned, built and raced one of these motorcycles. It may not have turned out exactly the way I wanted it. This time I figured start all over again with a Fresh Build for the street with some of the AHM details.

This is where I came up short back in the 80's. I had the basics of the frame bracing done, GL1000 forks reworked to a point. As for the rear suspension, it never really came together as good as it should have.

My first priority this time around is to build the FRAME/CHASSIS: I am searching to purchase a COMPLETE 1981-82 CB750F. At this point, there seems to be a limited supply available.

The other option is to find a 1981-82 CB750F FRAME with the ability to register for the STREET.

The other option is to find a 1983 CB750SC Nighthawk FRAME

My next priority is the CHASSIS/SUSPENSION: Since a Honda "Works" suspension might not be an option due to limited knowledge of availability. I have seen a few create options for the front forks (ex; GL1500), Nissin Brake Calipers (ex; CBR900RR/CBR1000RR).

My final priority is the MOTOR: I think I have a handle on this part. I'm sure a few additional details once he completes a few projects he is currently working on.

thats a great intro - and your already on the right track with the right person

if its any help, I recently aquired the Tony Foale program for chassis / suspension - if you take a look at his web sight to see what it does, and if you want the no's crunched then no problem

I'm working on getting you at least a frame and maybe a complete bike? We just need to steer clear of the 900 and 1100 frames as they create more work for me to get the motor mounts the way they should have been.

Are 750C frames the same as 750F frames? There's a guy an hour from me that is selling a frame with lots of parts (no engine or forks/front wheels) but it's a 750C.

Also would need to be shipped so maybe not a good option?

I was told that there were three Frames/Chassis I should be looking for:

1981-82 CB750F

1981-82 CB750K

1983 CB750SC

I haven't heard if the CB750C was an option or not.

To clarify for others so they fully understand. We are going to be cutting off the rear sub-frame to install the custom made AHM style sub-frame and the steering neck will get cut and tucked. Therefore any 750 frame will work for what we are doing.

The bike locally is a 1982 CB750C mostly complete with title. Missing engine, pipe, and forks/wheel in front. He wants $250 or best offer.
Will also need to be shipped, which i have no idea on cost.

I have been encouraged to find a 1981-82 frame since these frames offer the larger pivot bolt holes and pivot bolt. I will keep this open as an option since we have not decided on a donor bike yet.

I have been working on collecting information on a few of the OEM items that have been used for modifications to the Chassis/Suspensions. I listed multiple options under each category since I will most likely have several builds happening. I figured I would put this information out there in an effort to get some feedback as to what works, what doesn't and other possible options I may have overlooked.

Triple clamps:
Notes: Searching for similar options

• AHM Style Aluminum Billet Triple Clamps
• Similar Style Aluminum Billet Triple Clamp

Front Fork:[Check Axel Bolt Dia.]
Notes: OEM Stock Conventional 41mm - 43mm that is 774.7mm [30.5"] in length or greater

I believe CB1100F aka the CB900F on the Home Page went with the CB400SF swing arm as well.

Regarding the blackbird swingarms (CBRXX) try and find the earlier model (pre 01 if I remember correctly). The later models have to be machined to fit. Earlier models just need to have spacers made.

WRONG! Dammit I always get that backwards. It's the later model that doesn't need machining but needs spacers. You would think I could rember this cause I put one on my 1100. Someone chime in (Shawn / Darren). Fucking brain.....

It's too long Todd and needs machining at the pivot. Just mount the GSXR600 arm and put that part of the bike to rest. I don't know a single person that would dock the bike because it has a non Honda swingarm on it. The purist's won't care because it's not stock anyway.

Just my two cents which doesn't count for much.

I'll put it this way, There are 2 different swingarms on the blackbird. They are basically the same but one is wider at the pivot. It needs machined. The other is much narrower. You can machine spacers that fit into the bearings (which also fills in for the smaller diameter pivot bolt I believe) and it will fit perfectly. But as Jim says it lengthens your wheel base a little. Not much though. On a street bike you wouldn't be able to tell. I took a bunch of pics when I did mine so if you need to see something let me know.

Personally I was leaning more towards the AHM style arm that you have been developing in your shop. I sure we will get the chance to utilize the GSXR600 arm which is a deal at $642.00 considering I have more than one of these projects that are in the works.
