Seattle Cycle Center used to be a pretty cool place for decent accessories and service. They don't snub older bikes, but their srvc. prices aren't great. I only ever used them for rim / tire work.

I had the same problem, I just ended up using it and I would push the handle side to side to give the extra cleanernce I needed to get the shim in
