What do you guys have for luggage? I want to do some traveling this summer, haven;t gotten any luggage yet oast getting a nice expandable magnetic tank bag for my wife's GS500, about $35 off CL. I'm thinking tankbags, saddle bags and perhaps tailbags for both bikes. I don't want to brake the bank though. Here's a pic I found on Facebook of a F with some luggage, looking good(I don't know if the owner is on this forum or not):

I can vouch for the MotoPak stuff - I have a set of soft saddlebags and a tank bag. In this picture I used a plastic tool box as a tail trunk.

Picked up a Motopak GT-27 tank bag off of Ebay for $50 delivered. Good quality, Strong magnets, Expands large enough to put a ¾ helmet in it, Alot of features. Will probably pick up a set of their saddlebags for longer trips. |

I'm using a set from Nelson Rigg (sp?) They work great, hold lots of stuff, saddlebags are expandable, but they're a tad too long, they cover the blinkers. Fit good on the X, though.
Be very careful with the magnetic tank bags, I made the mistake of setting mine by the pump when I was filling up and it picked up a bit of metal, put a big ole scratch in my tank, not humorous

LMAO
I'm liking MOTOPAK stuff, especially coz they have that roll thing that goes across the saddle bags. That would be awesome for camping gear!
And they are a Canadian company? Nice. You say they are in Winnipeg but I just checked out their site and this is the info:
Mail Red Line Sports Ltd.
129 - 2440 Old Okanagan Hwy
Westbank, B.C. V4T 1X6
CANADA
EDIT: I just did a search on a BC forum and it appears that they indeed did move from Winnipeg to Kelowna, BC. Nice riding upgrade!
The Cortech stuff seems like quality stuff as well.

What size are those saddle bags? They have 44, 60 and 90L sets. |

I've got some Honda soft panniers which fit any of my bikes (Boldors or Blackbird). The only photo I have is with them sitting on the covered Blackbird. They seem like good quality (if not cheap to buy) and fit quite securely. Honda even include a sheet of contact to put on the sides of the tail cowl to protect the paintwork. I also have a small mag tankbag for gps and other small crappola.

Cool. I'm thinking about getting those in that size plus the roll camping thing that clips onto them:

Have duct tape and bungee cords, will travel;
This picture's been around for a while and I think it deserves to be our new home page photo . |

This is my 'F in full touring mode.
Rack and panniers by Schuh, 25 or 30 years old.
Topbox is a Givi TE33 brought new about 5 years ago and the tank bag is this years model, made by Oxford.
With this set up and with Pretty Pillion on the back i figure an all in weight of around 430 (ish) kilos.
I find that I need 45 psi in the rear tyre to make her handle anything like acceptable in a straight line. I just did 1000 miles this past Easter hols and she handles motorway speeds OK, but show her anything other than a slow, slow corner and the chocolate swinger feels like it's starting to melt !

My bike luggage is ancient stuff, an Eclipse tank bag and a pair of BagMan saddlebags, along with a Nelson-Rigg tail bag. |

Some other idea's...
Another shot of Tony (my bare skin shall never touch the street) Bagley
Bag on a carrier...
I like this setup with a bag attached to a sissy bar
I am anal about my paint so I do not use saddle bags.
I also use black electrical tape on the tank to keep it looking new when I put the expandable tank bag on.
On the carrier I use a SHAD.
Then there's the old Wind Bag...Oooops wrong category
And no bag at all
Of course you may have to choose between the faster or slower bag...
Long line of bags.... some have beer!

I have the Hondaline soft bags; they're OK but small and not waterproof once the plastic covers blow off--which they did the first trip I made with them.
IF (big IF) I were going to put bigger luggage on my bike, I'd start with Zero Halliburton suitcases; and then fabricate a rack to hold them.
Z-H is hardened aluminum, with a rubber seal to keep out moisture. Perfect for bike use. Not too expensive used on eBay, either, I think it's because the locks don't meet TSA requirements--so folks are unloading them.
They're the same cases as used on Deal...Or No Deal--I think. I've got an 18 X 13 X 6 or so that'd be the perfect size, just need one for the other side of the bike. |

Well, thanks to Craigslist, I luggaged up a bit this weekend. I got a pair of older Teknic saddle bags(60L) and today I came across this semi-hard Kuryakyn tail bag made for cruisers(sissy bar velcro attachment). It's a big one so my wife and me might not need anything else between her tail bag, the pair of above mentioned saddle bags and this thing(I calculated about 65L for this bag).
The deal was good and the bag seems REALLY solid and is in nice shape, so I bought it. Aside from useless(to me) sissy bar velcro attachment, it attaches in 4 points in the bottom corners and those straps perfectly fit the grab bars on the F. In addition it came with two extra straps and it's got hoops on all around it, other then on the bottom. I'm thinking there are plenty of ways to keep it secure behind me, attached to the the grab rails as well as perhaps under the seat. And it might provide some back support for me.
What do you think? Here's a couple of pics.. it's a big one!

I picked up these vintage 80's Bag Man saddlebags (brand new!) at a swap meet last summer. They fit very well, there are two straps over the back seat and rubber covered hooks to the grab bars. The bags have straps that Velcro to the straps on the bike, and I also zip tie the front of the bags to the shock springs. I like the way they hold their shape when empty, I'm sure a lot of modern soft bags are similar.
I'd love to get some hard bags & mounts for my 900. I'll have to start keeping my eyes open. |
